Cambridge ENT Skull Base Fellowship
Based at: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Supervising Consultants: Mr Patrick Axon, Mr Daniele Borsetto, Mr Neil Donnelly, Mr Rishi Sharma and Mr James Tysome
Fellowship duration: 12 months
Stated learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate a holistic approach to the management of patients with all skull base pathologies including lateral, anterior and central.
- Effectively work in Skull Base, NF2 and pituitary MDTs .
- Evaluate treatment options and communicate these effectively with the patients, including potential outcomes and complications, and document these discussions accurately.
- Demonstrate competence in microscopic, endoscopic and open surgical skull base techniques.
- Demonstrate experience in critical appraisal of articles submitted to peer-reviewed journals.
Clinical competencies to be achieved:
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary setting, and safely and appropriately manage skull base and pituitary pathology.
- Surgical skills in 360o skull base surgery .
- Ability to effectively deal with intra-operative/post-operative complications, e.g. CSF leaks
- Develop critical appriasal of skull base research
The number of main operations the fellow could expect to be involved in:
- All operations are performed jinly with neurosurgery and include:
- 50 vestibular schwannomas.
- 60 pituitary adenomas
- 10 chordomas/chondrosacomas
- Smaller numbers of CPA and anterior fossa meningiomas, paragangliomas, epidermoids, petrous apex cholesteatomas, craniopharyngiomas, squamous cell carcinoma of the temporal bone, sinonasal carcinomas, and lateral and anterior CSF leak repairs.
