Stated learning outcomes:

  • To be competent in the assessment, management and follow-up of patients with pituitary and anterior skull base pathology, to understand relevant anatomy, surgical approaches and MDT working.
  • To be competent in core and applied endoscopic skull base operative techniques, enhanced communication techniques with patients with complex pathology and MDT members.
  • To be a new consultant competent in managing all aspects of an endoscopic pituitary and skull base practice.
  • To participate in at least one audit and research project and aim to present at the annual British Skull Base Society meeting. Research will be encouraged and the fellow will be expected to be involved in developing academic aspects of pituitary & skull base.

Clinical competencies to be achieved:

  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary setting, and safely and appropriately manage pituitary and anterior skull base pathologies, operatively and non-operatively.
  • Ability to safely resect pituitary and anterior skull base pathologies endoscopically & open, e.g. pituitary micro- and macro-adenomas, meningiomas, anterior skull base CSF leaks, and other less common lesions e.g. chordoma, and to deal with their potential complications.

The number of main operations the fellow could expect to be involved in:

Approximately 100 pituitary and over 50 anterior skull base procedures / year. Pituitary MDT manages >500 new referrals per year, skull base MDT manages >800 new referrals per year.
